How do we know the Bible is true?

SEVEN PROOFS THAT SHOW THAT THE BIBLE IS A TRUSTWORTHY BOOK.

#1. One of the greatest miracles of the Bible is its UNITY. The 66 books of the Bible were written over an estimated 1,500 years on three continents in three languages by about 40 different people who, in most cases, had never met. Their education and background varied greatly. They were kings, shepherds, scientists, attorneys, an army general, fishermen, priests, and a physician. Yet, though it seems totally inconceivable, the 66 books maintain an AMAZING CONSISTENCY and harmony with each other. Jesus Christ Himself said, "Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35). The Bible is true and has a basic unity of thought and principles that cannot be broken or contradicted.

ONE OF THE FOREMOST BIBLE SCHOLARS OF THE PAST CENTURY, F.F. BRUCE, WROTE: "THE BIBLE IS NOT SIMPLY AN ANTHOLOGY [A COLLECTION OF BOOKS]; THERE IS A UNITY WHICH BINDS THE WHOLE TOGETHER ..." (_The Books and the Parchments: How We Got Our English Bible_, 1984, pp. 88-89).

	2. *FULFILLED PROPHECIES - The remarkable evidence of fulfilled prophecy is just one case that the Bible can be trusted. Hundreds of Bible prophecies have been fulfilled, specifically and meticulously, before the event had taken place. For example, Daniel [1] the prophet predicted that Christ [2] would come as Israel's promised Savior and Prince which was clearly and definitely fulfilled, hundreds of years later.

More than 300 prophecies were fulfilled by Christ Himself at His first coming. Only the Bible manifests this remarkable prophetic evidence, and it does so on such a tremendous scale as to render support for divine revelation.

Do Bible prophecies confirm inspiration? The Bible says, "I am the Lord . . . new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them." Isaiah 42:8, 9. "I am God . . . Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done." Isaiah 46:9, 10.

Bible predictions of things to happen in the future confirm the inspiration of Scripture as they come to pass. Notice the following examples of fulfilled Bible prophecies:

	A. Four world empires to arise: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome (Daniel chapters 2, 7, 8).

	B. Cyrus to be the warrior to capture Babylon (Isaiah 45:1-3).

	C. After Babylon's destruction, it would never be inhabited again (Isaiah 13:19, 20; Jeremiah 51:37).

	D. Egypt would never again have a commanding position among the nations (Ezekiel 29:14, 15; 30:12, 13).

	E. Earth-shaking calamities and fear toward the end of time (Luke 21:25, 26).

	F. Moral degeneracy and decline of spirituality in the last days (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

The Old Testament predictions of the Messiah to come were so specific and so clearly fulfilled by Jesus of Nazareth proving that Jesus was, indeed, the Messiah.

There are more than 125 of these prophecies. Let's review just 12 of them:

Prophecy Old Testament Scripture New Testament Fulfillment

	1. Born in Bethlehem Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1

	2. Born of a virgin Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-23

	3. Of David's lineage Jeremiah 23:5; Revelation 22:16

	4. Attempted murder by Herod Jeremiah 31:15; Matthew 2:16-18

	5. Betrayal by a friend Psalms 41:9; John 13:18, 19, 26

	6. Sold for 30 silver coins Zechariah 11:12; Matthew 26:14-16

	7. Crucified Zechariah 12:10; John 19:16-18, 37

	8. Lots cast for His clothes Psalms 22:18; Matthew 27:35

	9. No bones broken Psalms 34:20; Exodus 12:46; John 19:31-36

	10. Buried in rich man's tomb Isaiah 53:9; Matthew 27:57-60

	11. Year, day, hour of His death Daniel 9:26, 27; Exodus 12:6; Matthew 27:45-50

	12. Raised the third day Hosea 6:2; Acts 10:38-40

Dr. Peter Stoner, former chairman of the departments of mathematics, astronomy, and engineering at Pasadena College (California), worked with 600 students for several years applying the "principle of probability" to the prophecies of the Messiah's coming. They chose just eight from the many available and finally decided the chances of all eight being fulfilled in one man in a lifetime is one in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. What would the odds be on the more than 125 prophecies of the Messiah? It couldn't just happen!

	3. ACCURACY OF SCIENTIFIC STATEMENTS MADE IN THE BIBLE.

The Bible says, "Thy word is true from the beginning." Psalms 119:160.

Here are a few Bible statements that have been confirmed by science:

	A. "He . . . hangeth the earth upon nothing." Job 26:7. This scientific fact is from Job, the Bible's oldest book.

	B. "He . . . sitteth upon the circle of the earth." Isaiah 40:22. The Bible said the earth is round centuries before man found out.

	C. "To make the weight for the winds." Job 28:25. Long before scientists knew, God said air has weight.

	D. "By Him [Jesus] all things consist." Colossians 1:17. The word "consist" here literally means "hold together" or "cohere." Many Bible translations put it "hold together." This is the answer to the nuclear physicists' worrisome question about the atom. The real mystery of the atom does not involve its benumbing mega-power, but rather, "Why doesn't the atom fly apart?" Scientific knowledge says it should, but it doesn't. Some scientists are wondering what puzzling power, completely unknown to them, is holding it together. The Bible says that mysterious power is the Creator, God Himself.

	*

Roundness of the earth (Isaiah 40:22 [3])
	*

Almost infinite extent of the sidereal universe (Isaiah 55:9 [4])
	*

Law of conservation of mass and energy (II Peter 3:7 [5])
	*

	Hydrologic cycle (Ecclesiastes 1:7 [6])
	*

Vast number of stars (Jeremiah 33:22 [7])
	*

Law of increasing entropy (Psalm 102:25-27 [8])
	*

Paramount importance of blood in life processes (Leviticus 17:11 [9])
	*

	Atmospheric circulation (Ecclesiastes 1:6 [10])
	*

	Gravitational field (Job 26:7 [11])

	4. HISTORICAL STATEMENTS.

The historical accuracy [12] of the Scriptures is likewise in a class by itself. ARCHEOLOGICAL [13] CONFIRMATIONS OF THE BIBLICAL RECORD HAVE BEEN ALMOST INNUMERABLE IN THE LAST CENTURY.

BIBLE HISTORICAL STATEMENTS ARE ACCURATE. What God says in His book is true (Isaiah 45:19). Sometimes, temporarily, evidence may not be found to substantiate certain historical facts from the Bible, but in time the evidence surfaces. Note the following:

	A. For years skeptics said the Bible was unreliable because it mentions the Hittite nation (Deuteronomy 7:1) and cities like Nineveh (Jonah 1:1, 2) and Sodom (Genesis 19:1), which they denied ever existed. But now modern archaeology has confirmed that all three did, indeed, exist.

	B. Critics also said that Bible-mentioned kings Belshazzar (Daniel 5:1) and Sargon (Isaiah 20:1) never existed. Once again, it has now been confirmed they did exist.

	C. Skeptics also said the Bible record of Moses was not reliable because it mentions writing (Exodus 24:4) and wheeled vehicles (Exodus 14:25), neither of which they said existed at the time. They, of course, know better today.

	D. At one time the 39 kings of ancient Israel and Judah who reigned during the divided kingdom were authenticated only from the Bible record, so critics charged fabrication. But then archaeologists found cuneiform records that mentioned many of these kings and, once again, the Bible record was proved accurate. Critics have repeatedly been proved wrong as new discoveries confirm biblical people, places, and events. It will always be so.

	5. BIBLICAL HEALTH PRINCIPLES.

	A. Cover body waste with dirt (Deuteronomy 23:12, 13).

The Bible provision of Moses' day that body waste should be buried was 3,500 years ahead of its time and saved countless thousands of Jewish lives. Major problems still arise when sanitation is not properly handled.

	B. "Neither let us commit fornication." 1 Corinthians 10:8.

The word "fornication" denotes all kinds of immoral sexual conduct. There would be no AIDS epidemic.

	C. Abstain from alcoholic beverages (Proverbs 23:29-32).

Consuming alcohol has brought untold woe to many.

	1. Millions have become alcoholics .

	*

	Millions of homes broken.

	3. Multiplied thousands of lives destroyed by intoxicated drivers.

Note: God not only tells us how to succeed with joy amid today's harrowing problems, but He also gives us the miraculous power to do it (1 Corinthians 15:57; Philippians 4:13; Romans 1:16). Bible health principles are relevant and desperately needed, but few are listening.

	6. THE BIBLE IS INTACT.

Of all the ancient works of substantial size, only the Bible comes to us completely intact. This is against all odds and expectations. In comparison, William Shakespeare's plays, written only about 400 years ago, and after the invention of the printing press, are in much worse shape. Shakespeare's original words have been lost in numerous sections, and scholars are left to fill in the blanks as best as they can.

But when it comes to the Bible, ITS UNCANNY PRESERVATION HAS PERMITTED IT TO WEATHER THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF WARS, PERSECUTIONS, FIRES AND INVASIONS, AND STILL REMAIN INTACT. As author JOSH MCDOWELL NOTES: "COMPARED WITH OTHER ANCIENT WRITINGS, THE BIBLE HAS MORE MANUSCRIPT EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT IT THAN ANY TEN PIECES OF CLASSICAL LITERATURE COMBINED" (_THE NEW EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT_, 1999, P. 9).

How was this amazing task accomplished? The Old Testament text was preserved by Jewish scribes through the centuries. Scholars unanimously praise their faithful copying and transmission of the text.

PROFESSOR BERNARD RAMM EXPLAINS: "Jews preserved it as no other manuscript has ever been preserved. With their [scribes] they kept tabs on every letter, syllable, word and paragraph. They had special classes of men within their culture whose sole duty was to preserve and transmit these documents with practically perfect fidelity. Who ever counted the letters and syllables and words of Plato or Aristotle or Seneca?" (_Protestant Christian Evidences_, 1953, pp. 230-231).

WHAT ABOUT THE NEW TESTAMENT? Here the actual number of preserved manuscripts is so great that it becomes overwhelming.

MCDOWELL WRITES: "There are more than 5,686 known Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. Add over 10,000 Latin Vulgate and at least 9,300 other early versions, and WE HAVE CLOSE TO, IF NOT MORE THAN, 25,000 MANUSCRIPT COPIES OF PORTIONS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT IN EXISTENCE TODAY. No other document of antiquity even begins to approach such numbers ...

"In comparison, HOMER\'S _ILIAD_ IS SECOND, WITH _ONLY 643_ MANUSCRIPTS that still survive. The first complete preserved text of Homer _dates from the thirteenth century_" (p. 34, emphasis added).

JESUS SAID, "HEAVEN AND EARTH WILL PASS AWAY, BUT MY WORDS WILL BY NO MEANS PASS AWAY" (MATTHEW 24:35). His words have become a prophecy that is still rock-solid in our day. With billions of Bibles in more than 2,000 languages now distributed around the world, God's Word will by no means pass away.

	7. BIBLE’S EFFECT

The Bible is unique also in terms of its effect on the lives of individual men and women. It appeals to both hearts and minds of people in every nationality, rich or poor, scholar or simple, king or commoner, men of literally every background and walk of life. AS U.S. PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT REMARKED, "A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS WORTH MORE THAN A COLLEGE EDUCATION." NO OTHER BOOK HAS EVER HELD SUCH UNIVERSAL APPEAL NOR PRODUCED SUCH LASTING EFFECTS.

One more evidence that the Bible is true is found in the TESTIMONY OF THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED IT. Multitudes of people, past and present, have found from personal experience that its promises are true, its counsel is sound, its commands and restrictions are wise, and its wonderful message of salvation meets every need for both time and eternity. The Bible yields results!

The final proof of the Bible's inspiration is very simple—APPLY IT AND IT WILL WORK FOR YOU. HOWEVER, REAPING ITS BLESSINGS TAKES FAITH—AN ACTIVE BELIEF THAT GOD\'S WORD IS TRUE AND THAT APPLYING IT WILL YIELD POSITIVE RESULTS. The Bible puts it this way: "BUT WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE HIM, FOR HE WHO COMES TO GOD MUST BELIEVE THAT HE IS, AND THAT HE IS A REWARDER OF THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM" (HEBREWS 11:6).

Moreover, the impact Jesus Christ has had in millions of lives continues unabated. THE FRENCH EMPEROR NAPOLEON BONAPARTE ONCE SAID: "I KNOW MEN AND I TELL YOU THAT JESUS CHRIST IS NO MERE MAN. BETWEEN HIM AND EVERY OTHER PERSON IN THE WORLD THERE IS NO POSSIBLE TERMS OF COMPARISON. ALEXANDER, CAESAR, CHARLEMAGNE, AND I HAVE FOUNDED EMPIRES. BUT ON WHAT DID WE REST THE CREATIONS OF OUR GENIUS? UPON FORCE. JESUS CHRIST FOUNDED HIS EMPIRE UPON LOVE; AND AT THIS HOUR MILLIONS OF MEN WOULD DIE FOR HIM" (QUOTED BY FRANK MEAD, _THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RELIGIOUS QUOTATIONS_, 1965, P. 56).

HISTORIAN PHILIP SCHAFF ADDS: "This Jesus of Nazareth, WITHOUT MONEY AND ARMS, CONQUERED MORE MILLIONS than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon. Without science and learning, He SHED MORE LIGHT ON THINGS HUMAN AND DIVINE THAN ALL PHILOSOPHERS AND SCHOLARS COMBINED. Without the eloquence of schools, He spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet.

"WITHOUT WRITING A SINGLE LINE, HE SET MORE PENS IN MOTION, and FURNISHED THEMES FOR MORE SERMONS, ORATIONS, DISCUSSIONS, LEARNED VOLUMES, WORKS OF ART, AND SONGS OF PRAISE, THAN THE WHOLE ARMY OF GREAT MEN OF ANCIENT AND MODERN TIMES" (_The Person of Christ_, 1913, p. 33).

Yes, the bottom line of proving the Bible true and that it should be trusted is that it works in you. Read it, believe it, and follow it. It works!

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17.

B. "He . . . sitteth upon the circle of the earth." Isaiah 40:22.

4. Historical statements.

The historical accuracy of the Scriptures is likewise in a class by itself. Archeological confirmations of the Biblical record have been almost innumerable in the last century.

As author Josh McDowell notes: "Compared with other ancient writings, the Bible has more manuscript evidence to support it than any ten pieces of classical literature combined" (The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict, 1999, p.

Who ever counted the letters and syllables and words of Plato or Aristotle or Seneca?" (Protestant Christian Evidences, 1953, pp.

"In comparison, Homer's Iliad is second, with only 643 manuscripts that still survive. The first complete preserved text of Homer dates from the thirteenth century" (p.

However, reaping its blessings takes faith—an active belief that God's Word is true and that applying it will yield positive results.

Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for him" (quoted by Frank Mead, The Encyclopedia of Religious Quotations, 1965, p.

"Without writing a single line, He set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise, than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times" (The Person of Christ, 1913, p. 33).

Yes, the bottom line of proving the Bible true and that it should be trusted is that it works in you. Read it, believe it, and follow it. It works!

Does It Matter What We Believe?

How is it that Christians read the same Bible yet teach different doctrines? With so many denominations and only one Bible, who is right? Are they all right or are they all wrong? Does it matter what we believe and teach? The answer to this question should be obvious. Following God's word is always in our best interest especially with so much at stake. His Truth always guides us in the right direction and for this reason we need to give earnest attention to understanding it.

But are most people really interested in knowing and following Bible truth? Could it be that we reject truth (Jesus), because we prefer following our own thinking and drawing our own conclusions. Consider some reasons why the religious leaders of Jesus' day rejected Him as the truth.

 	* _Disliked having the errors in their teachings and practices exposed._
 	* _Closed their eyes to truth because of their pride._
 	* _Lacked love for the truth (John 3:19; 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12)._
 	* _Failed to diligently search the scriptures regarding the accuracy of Jesus' claims._
 	* _Tended to listen more to the words of their teachers instead of the Word of God. (Isaiah 53)._

Sound familiar? The truth was unpopular in Christ's day as it is today, and for some of the same reasons. Unfortunately, many of us have never engaged in an in depth study of the Bible. We often pride ourselves on being students of the Scriptures but in reality do not know them. As a result, we are more inclined to accept doctrines that are not based on scripture but on hearsay. Jesus said, "Ye err not knowing the scriptures" (Matthew 22:29).

The real battle is not between denominations but between truth and error. With each denomination claiming to have truth it is important that we rely on what the Bible teaches. And when we consider the consequences of not following Bible truth we can conclude that it does matter.

What is your response to Truth?

Our sincerity is founded in understanding Scripture and conforming our lives to it.

Jesus stood in the judgment hall before Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator and governor of Judea while the leaders of the Sanhedrin and the mob waited outside. They wanted Pilate to accept the verdict of the Sanhedrin and sentence Jesus to death without a public trial. But Pilate could see through their scheme and knew their charges against Jesus were false and could not be substantiated.

“Art Thou the King of the Jews? Pilate asked Jesus. “Sayest thou this thing of thyself or did others tell it thee of Me?” Jesus was inquiring if Pilate’s true reason for his question was a real desire to know truth. But pride prevented Pilate from acknowledging any sincere interest in truth or the mission of Jesus. Wanting to give Pilate an understanding of the true nature of His kingdom, Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.

If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now is my kingdom not from hence.”

“Art thou a king, then?” Pilate asked (John 18:37). After affirming Pilate’s question, Jesus further explains elements of His mission by stating, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth My voice.” Jesus was trying to convey to Pilate that His followers, those who desire to be in His kingdom, hear His voice and are willing to follow Him because they love truth. The door was open for Pilate to enter into a discussion regarding the truth of Jesus’ mission and kingdom.

“Discerning truth depends more upon our attitude toward receiving it and our love for it, than on our capacity to understand it.”

Any desire Pilate might have had in listening further to Jesus did not exceed his concern for his political career. Protecting his self-interest was more important than his love for truth. Not wishing to hear any more, Pilate shrugged his shoulders and said, “What is truth?” (John 14: 6; 18:38). Here was Pilate’s golden opportunity but he chose to become a people pleaser which served his earthly ambitions rather than a desire for truth.

Jesus desired for Pilate to know the truth about His mission and His kingdom that would bring grace and salvation to the world (John 1: 17). Jesus came to bear witness to the truth about the Father. Since He came from the Father, Jesus can show us the way to the Father, the way from earth to heaven (John 6: 32-38). Jesus Christ is the true expression of the Father’s love for sinners.

Like Pilate many of us place more value on our own self-centered agenda. For the sake of gain and recognition we tend to place traditions and requirements of men above requirements of God. The decisions we make bear witness to whether or not our interest is centered in the things of this world or the truth of God.

Pilate’s rhetorical question “What is Truth?” is an important question for each of us today. But how will we respond? Now is our golden opportunity to accept Jesus, the Truth (John 14: 6). Many of us will undoubtedly choose as Pilate did and protect our self-interest and reject truth. But hopefully there will also be those who will say yes to Jesus, the Truth.

Discerning truth depends more upon our attitude toward receiving it and a love for it, than our capacity to understand it. Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher and mathematician, wrote, “God has given us evidence sufficiently clear to convince those with an open heart and mind, yet evidence sufficiently vague so as not to compel those whose hearts and minds are closed.” How will you respond to truth?

KEEPING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

A MATTER OF THE HEART

Some Christian groups used to say that we did not have to keep the Ten Commandments, that they were nailed to the cross and to keep them is "salvation by works." In fact the word legalism was often associated with keeping the commandments. Now many Christians want to post a version of them in schools and other public places.

Are the Ten Commandments important today? Absolutely! God considers them important. Solomon wrote that the conclusion of the whole matter of life is to reverence God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of every person. (Ecclesiastes 12: 13). Jesus said "If you love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15). "If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments." (Matthew 19:17).

If we know Him, we keep His Commandments. "He who says I know Him and does not keep His Commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him." (1 John 2:3,4). Not everyone who calls Him Lord or works miracles in His name has really accepted Jesus as Lord. In fact Jesus refers to them as being lawless, which means that they had no regard for His Law. (Matthew 7:21-23).

Ten Commandments are the standard by which God examines people in the heavenly judgment. This makes obeying them a life-or-death matter! "For God will bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." (Ecclesiastes 12: 14).

The Ten Commandments are a reflection of God's character. The Bible says that God is good, holy, perfect, pure, just, true, spiritual, righteous, faithful, love, unchangeable and eternal. Interestingly the Bible says the same things about His law. Visit our website for more information on this topic.

God's law is like a mirror pointing out sin in our lives. We need to carefully check our lives by the mirror of God's law. The law will direct us to Jesus for cleansing. It brings hope for this mixed-up, morally corrupt society and shows where to draw the line! (James 1:23-25).

Happiness, joy, peace, and more abundant living come to those who obey God's law. No wonder the Psalmist David said that God's commands are more desirable than gold. (Psalms 19:10; Proverbs 3: 1, 2; 29: 18; Psalms 119:165).

God's Ten Commandments in our hearts serve as a guide for what we think, say, and do. Obeying the commandments entitles us to the right to the tree of life, and entrance in through the gates into the Holy City. (Revelation 22:14).

In Conclusion, if we ignore even one of the commandments, we are neglecting part of the divine pattern, or blueprint. If only one link of a chain is broken, its purpose is not fulfilled. The Bible says that when we knowingly break any command of God, we are sinning (James 4:17), because we have refused His will for us.

"Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:19). If we don't keep all of them and teach others not to, we will not be a part of God's kingdom. Pastors and Bible teachers beware. Teach and preach all the commandments.

Jesus said that people draw near to Him with their mouth and only honor Him with their lips; but their hearts are far from Him. Their worship of Him is vain, teaching doctrines and commandments of men rather than the teachings of God. (Matthew 15:8, 9; Mark 7:7,9). It's our heart that God wants.

The value and benefit of the Ten Commandments work best in our lives when they are in our hearts. See follow up article next week. For further information go to our website: peopletopeopleministries.com Or you can request a free magazine at Keeping the Ten Commandments.

WRITTEN ON STONE? OR IN THE HEART?

THE BATTLE OVER THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Over the last few years, there has been an increasing controversy regarding the Ten Commandments. In fact the chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court lost his job for refusing to remove the two-ton granite monument that sat in the rotunda of the state courthouse. It is one of thousands placed around the country during the 1950's and 1960's by the Fraternal Order of Eagles with the support of Cecil B. DeMille, the director, who was promoting his movie "The Ten Commandments"

There seems to be a growing focus on removing the mention of God from the pledge of allegiance, and much of Bible truth is being eliminated from American life. Some individuals believe that removing the Ten Commandments from American public life has had an impact on our society. Such a conclusion is based on the increase of violence and the lack of morality as expressed in some of our music and movies. It seems as though things are getting worse and worse in our society. According to the Bible (2 Timothy 3:1-5), the last days will be perilous. From the events occurring in society, it appears that we are currently living in those times.

It seems that people have practically no respect for law or constituted authority, either of God or of man! On the international scene, nations rise against nations as the so-called treaties of peace are not worth the paper on which they are written.

While the nation debates where the Ten Commandments should be displayed, it is interesting to note that in the Bible there is no mention of putting them on buildings of any kind. It does, however, mention that God wants them written in our hearts. This term "hear" in scripture is frequently used in referring to various attitudes, emotions, and intelligence. In Exodus 8:32 the hardening of Pharao's heart indicated his attitude of rebellion against God (Hebrews 3:7-10). A stony heart describes a state of spiritual insensitivity and moral indifference (Ezekiel 11:19). God is able to give to us a new heart (Heb. 8:10) indicating a complete change of attitudes, desires, and ambitions (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Christ dwells in the heart by faith (Ephesians 3:17). In many passages in scripture where it mentions a person's heart, it is basically referring to the seat of intelligence (mind)."I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people" God writes His law in our minds that we might understand them and allow them to be the foundation of our thoughts and actions. The Ten Commandments speak of moral responsibility to God and to each other. When we review these precepts they reveal love for God and for one another.

Can our society gain from putting the Ten Commandments on public buildings as artifacts to be displayed? Society will gain from them only if people live by them and allow them to be a moral standard for behavior. If not, we will continue in spiritual chaos, lawlessness, and wretchedness in the human heart.

These commandments aren't called the ten suggestions, ten recommendations, or the ten greatest ideas. They are the Law of God; and keeping them will give people of all nations peace, joy, and happiness. (Micah 4:2). This can only be accomplished with a relationship with the God of heaven through His Son Jesus The Christ.

WHERE WILL THE TEN COMMANDMENTS HAVE THE MOST INFLUENCE, IN A ROTUNDA OF A COURTHOUSE, ON A PUBLIC BUILDING, OR IN OUR HEARTS?

	...tradition

The "traditions of men" do not have authority over Scripture, although it seems we place more importance upon rituals and traditions than the teachings of the Bible. When this happens the word of God is rendered powerless in our lives. Jesus said that there are those who draw near to Him with their lips (talk), but their heart is far from Him (their life invalidates their profession). In vain do we worship Him, teaching doctrines and commandments of men (Matthew 15:8,9; 7:21-23; Mark 7:6-9). The power to overcome sin is in following the Word of God, written and human form (John 1:1,14).

	...convenience.

There are many reasons we attend a particular church. It could be that we were raised in the church, family and friends attend it, the familiar environment, baptized there, married or dedicated there or its proximity to home. Whatever the reason we remain there. But should any of these reasons transcend the importance of truth? Absolutely not! They are subordinate to truth and do not replace the importance of knowing and following truth. Jesus said whoever loves his father, mother, son or daughter more is not worthy of Him (Matthew 10:37). We must be willing to leave comfortable and familiar surroundings, as did Abraham, and follow Jesus the Truth.

	...unity.

With so many different Christian doctrines, how do we establish unity in the body of Christ and at what price? We sometimes compromise our beliefs by yielding to the voices of those calling for harmony and cooperation. This is done while sacrificing truth. The popular thinking of the day appears to suggest that all religions are equal and in spite of differences, ultimately lead to God. We are finding that for the sake of unity many religious groups are burying the old hatchets of doctrinal differences and beginning to see eye to eye. True unity of God's people is always based upon truth. Jesus prayed for His followers to be one as He and His Father are one (John 17:21). God has called His people to uphold unity on the platform of truth and not sacrifice it for the appearance of unity. Only by following the leading of the Holy Spirit who will guide and lead to truth can we achieve true unity.

	...popularity.

Following the crowd has often proven to be wrong but dangerous as in the case of the antediluvians in the time of Noah (Luke 17:26). Only eight people went into the ark to be saved from the flood. Sodom and Gomorrah is another example of how it is not always wise to follow the crowd. Christ said, "...wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:13,14). Jesus also said "That which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God" (Luke 16:15). Truth has never been popular with the masses. And those in the majority today, as in ages past are not really looking for truth as much as they are looking for a religion that will allow them to live as they want to live.

	...sincerity.

Sincerity coupled with error can be deadly. In fact it doesn't count for anything—unless it is coupled with truth. Sincerity of the heart is praiseworthy and necessary for faith, but it is not an acceptable substitute for following truth. One can be sincere, yet sincerely wrong. For instance, there are people who practice "snake handling" as part of their religious beliefs. As a result some have died. This practice may be performed out of a heart of sincerity but if what they are doing is based on false doctrine it can be deadly. People have also believed the second coming of Jesus was to occur on a specific date. They were sincere, but they were wrong. The Bible says, no man knows the day or hour not even the angels in heaven (Mark 13:32; Matthew 24:42). Our sincerity is founded in understanding Scripture and conforming our lives to it. Just as sincerity does not negate natural law, neither does it cancel spiritual law.
